About Plastic Astronauts

Astronauts evoke the final frontier, the ultimate heroes. A plastic astronaut could be a favorite toy, the big dream. But plastic also brings to mind excessive consumption and false appearances. Are today’s space travelers still interested in Earth? When does exploration become conquest? When does exploration become abandonment?

Artwork

The album art features a collage of children’s drawings depicting an astronaut and a rocket. These illustrations were created by a four-year-old. He will grow up in a world where he will learn whether the dream of space travel is one of hope or one of despair.

Lyrics

Light the torch
Ignite the engine
Let the fire burn
Go explore the other side
Of the thing you never earned
Suit up you fools
Protect yourself
It’ll be your turn
Go and travel far and wide
Don’t make a big return
Oh you plastic astronauts
Why don’t you stay away
Go and find another earth
To ruin and to play
Oh you plastic astronauts
Why don’t you stay away
Go and find another earth
To ruin and to play
Build a house
Make a home
Shaped like a balloon
You’ll all be going pretty fast
And you’ll be leaving soon
Another place
Another time
All this afternoon
Looks like we might stay behind
Please wave from the moon
Oh you plastic astronauts
Why don’t you stay away
Go and find another earth
To ruin and to play
Oh you plastic astronauts
Why don’t you stay away
Go and find another earth
To ruin and to play
Leave now
Leave now
Leave because it’s too late
Leave behind all of us
We’re all just stupid weight
Leave now
Leave now
Leave because it’s too late
Leave behind all of us
We’re all just stupid weight
